File sharing court case may get retrial

RiaaIf you read various blogs and websites today, you'll see that most of them think it's okay to illegally download music. I'm not sure why. If everyone stole records, then there would be no need to hang around waiting for bozo writer reviews would there? No, it strikes me that the blogs want to appear like 'they're one of the fans', not like those big nasty magazines who side with the recording industry and all their sponsorship. Before I start ranting, you can have out thoughts on the illegal download thing by clicking here and here.

Anyway, all this talk of downloads is in the fore thanks to Jammie Thomas. Remember? In a federal courtroom in Duluth, Minnesota, Jammie was accused of using KaZaA to download and offer for distribution almost 2000 songs. She was in one corner, and in the other, the Legion of Doom tag team (or EMI, Sony BMG, Interscope Records and Warner. This was a case of copyright infringement based on the premise that offering these files through KaZaA, Jammie was distributing the music and they felt that was illegal. She lost... however...

Like reggae? Step right this way...

Dr_alimantadoReggae can be a dodgy place to visit. For every great Dr Alimantado record, you can land square in a rotten Trojan cover of John Denver. Yes, it does exist ("taaake me hooome..."). So, if you don't have someone to call on for tips or a record shop that doesn't wanna play ball, you really need to pay ReggaeNews a visit.

Aside from reviews and articles, the site has a fistful of cracking podcasts which features killer dubs, jump up rocksteady, roots, ska, cool-ass digital reggae... pretty much anything that comes under the reggae umbrella. Thankfully, it doesn't stick to 60s and 70s, preferring to mix the old with the new. The only drawback is that you'll come away with a list of 'wants' the length of your arm. They've also got a great little interview with Jimmy Cliff.

Neil Young's 'archives' sounds... well... amazing

Neilyoung130 There's been loads of fuss for nigh on 10 years about Neil Young's 'Archives'. Was it going to be a boxset? A DVD set? What? People need answers... and now, looks like we've got 'em.

Free Pete Molinari session

Molinari_in_session

Fancy getting your hands on a free session from Pete Molinari? Well, you can and it's really pretty simple. Pete did a great acoustic Glass Shrimp on the 7th April 2008 for Kevin Head on London's Resonance 104.4 FM.

It features 4 tracks and an interview recorded a week before his new album 'A Virtual Landslide' was released. So what are you waiting for? Here's how you get it.

(a) Get the session for free with any purchase in the Damaged goods store by adding this to the basket before you checkout or...

(b) By signing up to the damaged goods mailing list (click here)

Dead easy. So, in return, I think you should repay Pete's kindness by voting for Pete in the Mojo Breakthrough Artist Award. He's going to be appearing live at the HMV shop in Oxford Street, London next Wednesday (30th April) alongside the legendary Fall. Click here.

Gnarls Barkley give LP away for free... but there's a twist

Gnarls Everyone seems to think that Gnarls Barkley are really, like, totally, like, weird 'n' stuff. I don't. I just think they're a pop band that do things the way they should be done... with a bit of inventiveness. If they don't get bored, they make more records. Easy. In fairness, I'm not really into their records, but that shouldn't stop you from liking them. I dare say it doesn't. Anyway, I've got some news about 'em. They're giving their new album away for free.

However, the fact that they're offering their album for nothing doesn't mean it's plain sailing for you. Hell no. They've posted their album up backwards. The Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse duo have just released 'elpuoC ddO ehT', which, I'm sure you don't need pointing out, is the name of their last album 'The Odd Couple', but in reverse. You can download the album by clicking here now. Now, where did I put those 'they really are an odd couple!' puns?

Portishead to stream new LP before release

Portishead4 Portishead are to stream their latest studio album Third online for a week before it's official release on April 28.

According to the BBC, Last.fm will exclusively stream 'Third' for a week from April 21 - seven days before the album's release.

The band's first single to be taken from the new LP album "Machine Gun" was released as a download and CD this week.

Free Ladytron download of new single

Ladytron

Ladytron are a very pleasant band to look at. They might baulk at the idea... but they are. One of the blokes looks a bit psychedelic, one of them is of the East (which is ALWAYS a cool look in a band) and the other two are lovely looking ladies. Thankfully for Ladytron, they make some decent records as well.

They have a new single coming out called Black Cat which you can download for free. How? Well, click here. That's it. Simple. Now kick 'em back and let the brutal electronics crush your skull whilst sexy synths play with your undercarriage.

Fans of the band will be pleased to know that there's a new LP out soon. The album, which Black Cat is taken from is called Velocifero.

Previously unreleased Nina Simone protest tracks to get online release

Ninasimone

I don't care that much for Nina Simone's early stuff, preferring the more angsty protest 'n' funk Nina ('Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter' is surely one of the finest soul records ever made... don't know it? Click here). Anyway, good news is that a compilation of previously unseen live performances and interviews with Nina Simone is due for online release today (April 8th).

'Protest Anthology' features live renditions of 'Strange Fruit', 'To Be Young, Gifted and Black' and 'I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free'. Digital distribution company, The Orchard, will release the five-part series on iTunes. The full listing of 'Protest Anthology' can be found if you read over.

As much as I dislike download only releases, this looks to be a decent addition to Nina's back catalogue and maybe, if it sells well, we'll see a 'full' release.

Portishead to preview LP live on the web

Portishead1 Portishead will preview new album Third on Current TV next Friday (11th April). We'll get to see the band perform eight songs from the new record live from somewhere in Somerset three weeks ahead of Third’s release. The show will premier at 10pm next Friday before it’s uploaded for your viewing pleasure to Current TV’s website, where it’ll remain for three weeks. Third comes out on the 28th of April. To visit Current's website, click here. If you wanna hear some leaked tracks from the new album, click here.

Rolling Stones get remixed by Soulwax - what do you think of it?

RollingstonesOkay. Here's an opinion splitter. Soulwax have remixed The Rolling Stones' classic 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'. Some people are throwing themselves in rivers after hearing it... whilst others are asking 'got any tablets?'

Of course, this ain't the first Stones remix (Fatboy Slim did 'Sympathy For The Devil') Which side are you on? What do you make of it? Ain't heard it? Click here and press one of the many play buttons.

Elbow frontman slates iTunes. Fine by us.

Garvey_ Elbow frontman Guy Garvey has had a pop at download service iTunes  (could I have made it sound more formal?) for allowing people to download album tracks individually. Should I moan about whining musicians? Hell no! Firstly, I love moaning and secondly, I love being a hypocrite (thus, giving me the opportunity to change my mind on all sorts of things in the future that are contrary to what I've said before).

Anyway.

The singer doesn't want people to have the facility to download individual Elbow tracks unless the band authorises it. Garvey argues the practice of allowing fans to pay for any song they want is killing off the album format. He sez; "Ultimately, iTunes is a device for selling hardware, MP3-playing hardware, so they should give the artists the freedom to lock their records if they want and it's something that I'm personally gonna see if I can make happen because it's fucking important. It's not the buying thing either, it's not like I want GBP7.99 (for an album) not 79p (for a single track). I'd rather people ripped the whole thing for free than got the individual tracks for 79p each, you know what I mean. There's no point in doing what we do otherwise." ONLY RELEASE STUFF ON 33RPM! That'll sort it.

Wanna listen to some leaked Portishead tracks from their new album, '3'?

PortisheadI'm gonna keep this short and sweet because, if you're anything like me, you'll be more interested in listening to new Portishead tracks, taken from their new LP, '3', than listening to me jabber on. First the tunes... then some news...

Click here to listen to The Rip. (It's moog-y, folky, it's brilliant)

Click here to listen to Silence. (Jarring stop/start funk. Ace.)

Now, if you wanna know when they're touring, read the tracklisting for their new album... and to see the artwork from their new album, then I ain't gonna tell you again. Instead, click here and you can read our previous article. Lookin' good son, lookin' good.

The deal is in conjunction with radio station Xfm (don't hold that against 'em) which will let you download it for nothing, and should you feel like it, you can buy a physical copy on CD on May 19. B52s Do you still care about the B-52s? Do you? We asked a while back and summa you answered the call. Well, do you wanna hear a song from their new LP? Do you!? Okay. I'll stop testin' ya.

The new track is called 'Hot Corner' and geetarist Keith Strickland calls it “loud, sexy rock & roll with the beat pumped up to hot pink.” I'm not sure what that means but I sure like it as a review.

Anyway, you probably don't wanna read anymore... you wanna listen to the music right? Well, click here and be whisked off into the weird and wonderful world of the B-52s! New LP out next month.

Oi. Skinflints. Want summore free Radiohead tracks?

Thom "...It's, like, totally amazing, like, Radiohead, like, giving away their music, like, it's totally inspiring..."

Radiohead fans! Prepare to pay no money for some more Radiohead music! California DJ/Producer AmpLive has released 'Radiohead Rainydayz Remixes' as a free download. The NME described the tracks as "remixed and reimagined"... reimagined? Surely re-imagining a song is simply remembering a song? Anyway, tracks remixed from 'In Rainbows' and featuring Del The Funky Homosapien and Chali2na (y'know? Him from Jurassic 5?), are yours for nuthin'.

Read over for the tracklisting and, more importantly, the website address where you can get these free 'reimagined' tracks...

GaragePunk.com - Online music never sounded as good

Grgpnk Sick of humping a boombox around on your shoulder? Your walkman need the heads cleaning? Well, why not build your morale with some snotty, hip shakin', sleazoid garage and go-go? Hmmm? Sound good? 'But where am I gonna find this suave shit?'

Well, I ain't ever got 'round to tellin' you about the GaragePunk podcasts because I thought it was a bit obvious... like, you lot were all already on to this... but then it hit me; you may not have ventured into the dark and dangerous world of men and their obscure record collections (then whut you doin' here in fairness?).

Anyway, you need to get yourself over to GaragePunk.com (click here) to find a vast array of different shows... some focusing on primitive rock 'n' roll, some on surf, some rockabilly, some snarling garage... some tick all of the above. It's a sonic throwdown with a whole heap of records that'll leave you breathless. Vinyl vultures, get a pen and paper ready... your wish-list is about to grow. Not only that, sign-up with the site and you can be part of a MySpace style community... except the only pervs you'll find are the ones with impeccable taste in music! Get down!

Death of the LP? I don't think so buddy... pt 2.5

Vrg33Okay... okay... this ain't strictly more on the Death of the LP chat... but it feels good having a discussion about this. Of course, I don't mean one of those adult discussions... more a pub styled rant.

I kicked off the debate about the pros of buying records and the cons of downloading... and Fuzz took it further by bemoaning the nonchalant attitude toward a flippant download of an entire back catalogue...

So what do you reckon? There's a big empty comment box below that needs your rants. Some have already got the ball rollin' in the other articles... so let's have it out! Is vinyl dying? Do you dig the artefact? Couldn't care less so long as you get your kicks?

Death Of The LP? I Don't Think So Buddy: Pt 2

Recordc

Further to Mof's piece about being a record freak in the mp3 age, heres an illustrative anecdote from...The Files Of Fuzz Squad.

So I'm at work the other week lookin' to do pretty much anything but get down to the J O B, and I spies this kid, studenty type, looks like he plays bass in Gomez, probably a Mogwai fan, that sort of vibe, he's in the office for the week doing some sorta temp work, I forget exactly what. I'm bored outta my skull anyways so figure'll I'll wander over to his desk and make with the nice. As I approach, The Kid's fishing a CD out of his bag. This is a crucial moment in our relationship. If he pulls out The Hoosiers or Foals I'm all set to turn the hell around and never look back. But if he pulls out The Immaculate Collection, Enter The 36 Chambers Or Bitches Brew, I know things are gonna be just rosy between us...

Death of the LP? I don't think so buddy...

Vinyl If you scour the internet about the death of vinyl... or indeed, the day of reckoning for the album, you'll find loads of people sniggering about sticking it to the people who own record companies. Man, these bozos who download everything are all freedom fighters aren't they? Well... no. A lot of people buy downloads legally, but you bet your arse that they're in the minority. Nope, people who download their catalogue are usually petty crims, stealing from the media that they say they love.

David Sheppard (of Mojo) says "a good album is more than a collection of songs; it’s an auteur statement played out in measured episodes – a rounded narrative as opposed to the MP3 library’s incongruent one-liners. Album buyers are connoisseurs of the exceptional, not librarians of the infinite." Of course, I'd never be that flowery, but it is worth bearing in mind that the best way to listen to music is to sit for 40 minutes as opposed to slave to the shuffle option.

Go dig the Norton 20th Anniversary Show featuring Mary Weiss from the Shangri-Las, Kim Fowley, Ronnie Spector, Roky Erickson, Robert Plant and some killer tunes!

Mary_shang Norton Records... man... they kill me. Prime slabs of primitive rock 'n' roll leaving you foaming and fitting on the floor. Surely that's what music is all about? That demented rush that makes your leg jerk against your will... Norton Records have been making me involuntarily spasm for too damn long.

Now, they're makin' me go green with their superb 20th Anniversary show. Presented by Dave the Spazz (you wouldn't take him home to meet the folks wouldya?) who takes us on a wild journey of garage and surf and anything else that takes his snotty fantasy. Still... it's a garage podcast... heard it all before right? Wrong. This podcast has an interview with Mary Weiss from the Shangri-Las (who we should all refer to as Mary Shang from now on), plus calls from Kim Fowley, Ronnie Spector, Roky Erickson, Deke Dickerson, The Alarm Clocks, Dale Hawkins, Robert Plant, Sam the Sham & ? from ? and The Mysterians. Are you for real?!?! If you wanna listen to 3 hours of the finest gonzoid rock 'n' roll, click here.

New demos up on Jesus and Mary Chain MySpace (and they're good)

JamcI'll keep this sweet. Jesus and Mary Chain have put up some new tracks on their MySpace page... they're only demos at the moment, but to be honest, they sound like classic JAMC to me and any further studio work might take away the sleazy magic and gloom.

War On Peace is a strung-out Velvet's styled smack tune (think Sunday Morning without the sweetness), whilst Boiling Over and Cookies are more noisy and up-tempo. The band are gearing up for some gigs in London in March... so if you're going, get learning the new lyrics now.

Click here to listen to the new demos on the Jesus And Mary Chain official MySpace page.

Patti Smith tells us all about Dylan in free podcasts

DylanpattiI dunno whut it is, but Bob Dylan and Patti Smith share more than a miserable pair o'faces and a wicked turn of phrase. When Dylan lost it, the flame of rock 'n' roll poet was passed to Patti... which is why it makes loadsa sense that a series of free (and official) Bob Dylan podcasts presented by Patti have been made available by Sony.

Ten short recordings have already been posted telling the story of Dylan's career chronologically, probably maxing at around 20 episodes, forming a two hour documentary. The tenth episode has just been thrown up which looks at Dylan The Christian Mop. Patti Smith acts as presenter and linkwoman, between Dylan recordings and interview snippets with the man himself plus contributions from musicians such as Roger McGuinn and Garth Hudson and commentators including Greil Marcus. All are legally downloadable as MP3 files... get 'em by clicking here.

MySpace picks the best bands with Earwig TV - but isn't that our job?

Earwig MySpace claims its new Earwig TV channel is 'set to be THE place to discover the next Kate Nash or Enter Shikari'. But they miss one obvious point - it is us the user that made those acts, not a committee of so-called experts.

Indeed, by choosing acts and promoting them, MySpace is becoming like the record labels it is supposed to be reacting against. But if you happen to be too lazy to look for new bands and the trust MySpace to find the best, you can now access 'exclusive video content' of the chosen few. For reference, those bands are Operator Please, Operahouse, Palladium, The Raid, IAMX, One Night Only, Milburn, The Thirst, The Duke Spirit, The Clik Clik and Alphabeat.

Saying that, MySpace stress it isn't a closed shop and if you want to be next on the roster, you can contact 'the talent hunters' at MySpace to be considered.

My Bloody Valentine plans online-only releases

Mbv Regular readers will know that My Bloody Valentine are back on the road and it looks like they're going back in the studio too - although fans will know that doesn't always equate to new albums on the horizon.

Quoted on Reuters
, the band's manager Vinita Joshi said: "The plan is that they will release the album themselves via the Internet, but there will also probably be a vinyl release."  He added: "At the moment, all I can say is that Kevin is getting the band back together and they will go into the studio next month to work on the new record."

The band has no plans to add to the dates previously announced, details of which you can find here.

Boots Number Seven cosmetics ad - Ernie K. Doe

If you're in the UK, you might be familiar with the latest Boots Number Seven cosmetics ad. However, you might not be familiar with the fine vintage soul tune that's playing in the background.

That tune is Here Come The Girls by Ernie K. Doe, with backed by the legendary Meters. I could be wrong, but I don't think you can pick it up as a 45. But you can download the MP3 from the SoulJazz Records website or you can pick up the excellent New Orleans Funk 1960 - 1975 album, which is available from the same label on LP set or CD.

Or if you just want to see the ad, watch it below...

Sub Pop go digital

Subpop The Sub Pop record label has been long loved by many record collectors and indie fans. Their back catalogue is wonderfully patchy and obscure, and includes everyone from Bonnie Prince Billy, to Nirvana, to, The Shins to Billy Childish, to Flight of the Conchords. I could go on and on. Well, for those of you who have been scurrying around looking for Sup Pop 100 on original vinyl... you might want to try out the online music store they've just set up.

They have over 200 full-length albums up for sale in 192kbps MP3 for $9.90 a throw and, although they're not offering single tracks (and in fairness, why should they?), they're planning on upgrading the bitrate soon and adding album art to the packages in PDF or a similar format (as, at present, they have cover art embedded in the MP3s). When they get to bringing out the posher versions, anyone who bought the 'lesser' product will get the updated version for free. Is this the way forward for indie labels? [via Gizmodo]

Jarvis Cocker sings about Fat Children

Cocker

Former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker has a new single  called Fat Children, which is going to be released on 16th July.

Fat Children sees Cocker returning to the sound that made him a famous bloke in the first place, and being honest, it's probably the best thing he's done in ages.

Here at Electric Roulette, we've been fortunate enough to have been given the chance to allow you to hear Fat Children for free before it's release.

If you want to hear Fat Children, click here and 'Save Target As' (or equivalent) and you'll get yourself a video of Jarvis performing the track live at Koko. Expect guitars and wry looks at British life.

Kings of Leon play live on the net

Kingsofleon

Southern drawled rockers Kings Of Leon's Hammersmith Apollo show next week is to air live over the internet. The show next Wednesday May 23 is being broadcast straight from the venue at 9pm, through a partnership between Control Room and MSN's 'Music In Concert' series.

As well as being shown live on the night, Kings of Leons fans will be able to access the concert footage for the next six months too. The Followill boys have recently completed a gruelling North American tour as support to the mighty Bob Dylan, U2 and Green Day as well as performing their own shows. Their recently released third album "Because Of The Times" has been very well recieved, even though it's a departure from their usual Exile on Main Street stylings. The MSN series has archive footage online of concerts by Oasis, Gomez and former Soundgarden man Chris Cornell. Click here to find out more.

Re-live the Trojan Reggae Weekend on 6music

Leeperry There were a few downsides to BBC 6music's Trojan Weekend - firstly, it was on at the weekend (when many of us are out), secondly, it was only available to digital radio owners and thirdly, was only available to UK residents who own one.

Don't despair - thanks to the BBC's Listen Again facility, you can re-live the weekend, wherever you are. That means you can check out the Tighten Up! Trojan documentary, hear Don Letts spinning his pick of the Trojan archives and best of all, you can check out Lee 'Scratch' Perry's 6mix set.

But don't hang about - it's only likely to be available for a week.

Tune into the Trojan Weekend at the 6music website

Are Apple breaking the rules with iTunes?

Ipod iPods. Pregnancy test kits with earphones are the must have for the discerning fashion victim. Well, news hits us that UK owners might be getting ripped off. An investigation into Apple has been launched by the EU to determine if iTunes has broken competition laws.

Specifically this is due to the fact UK music fans pay more per track than elsewhere in Europe, and do not have the choice to buy from the European site. Research by 'Which?' magazine in 2005 found that UK users paid 79p (1.16 Euros) to download a song compared with 66p (99 Euro cents) in France and Germany.

Beatles for sale (digitally)

Beatles The Beatles' back catalogue is set to be made available for download, their record label EMI confirmed via live webcast today. This agreement has finally been made after the Apple Corps Vs Apple Inc - over who owned the famous 'Apple' name, logo and trademark, was resolved earlier this year. It only seems fair after Lennon originally invented the iPod.

The conference held by EMI, with Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs present was much speculated about since it's sudden announcement yesterday. Until now, all recordings by the Fab Four have not been available on any MP3 format, and this deal means that their back catalogue will soon be downloadable from the Apple’s iTunes store – the biggest music download site in the world. It is unclear how soon the material will be available however, EMI CEO Eric Nicoli confirmed they were "working on it." With the demand for The Beatles in this format -  could we see the group have yet another chart topper?

The Saints - (I'm) Stranded

Blasting up from Down Under in the mid-70s, The Saints suffered in the popularity stakes from being tagged as "a bit weird" for your average, common or garden punk. In fact, the group's music had as much, if not more in common with soul, r'n'b and the healthy garage scene that flourished in Australia back in the '60s, than it did with the "no more than three chords, mate!" ideals of some of their contemporaries. Now, 30 and a bit years on from their first single, the band can be appreciated for what they were all along - bloody great. Dancing shoes on and enjoy.
