Manchester's finest recreate The Band's Last Waltz

Manchesterdoesthelastwaltz

This is a great idea for a gig. Basically, a group of musicians from Manchester (Manchester's finest some might argue) have teamed up to recreate and pay tribute to the legendary gig, The Last Waltz, by The Band (and friends).

In the line-up, we have John Ellis starring as Dr John, Liz Green as Muddy Waters, The Travelling Band starring as The Band, Aidan Smith as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Ten Bears of The Deadbeats as Bobby Dylan, Isobel Heyworth as Joni Mitchell, Gladeyes as Ronnie Hawkins and Pete Roe as Neil Young.

The event is Sunday 8th June with doors opening at 4.30pm. Where? It's at the Martin Harris Centre (M13 9PL, near the Royal Northern) and is £12.50 advance, £15 on the door. Tickets available from www.quaytickets.com

Well, just for you, we've got all the times that the artists will be on stage, so feel free to print this article off and start looking at the bands you'll be going to see and when. Explosions in the Sky is the weekend of May 16-18.

Dope line-up for Rock The Bells includes Mos Def, De La Soul and more...

Mighty_mos_def Man. I wouldn't wanna live in the US, but I wouldn't mind some of their gigs y'know? Mainly, I really wanna go to the Rock The Bells festival which, this years, is playing host to A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Mos Def, The Pharcyde, Nas, Rakim, Method Man & Redman, Raekwon & Ghostface... and the beat goes on and on!

Spiritualized to headline Green Man Festival

Spacemanj In an already busy summer, Spritualized have been added as headliner for the Green Man festival.

"They will be joining the Main Stage on Friday night alongside Drive By Truckers and King Creosote," in an announcement on the Green Man Festival web site.

Some other great news is that you can check out some of the group's new tracks the forthcoming 'Songs In A&E' at the band's MySpace page (click here for a listen). The new long player is 18 tracks long and the first full length Spiritualized release since Amazing Grace in 2003. Got to be honest here, sounds like the band's strongest work since 'Ladies and Gentlemen...'. For a full low down on the tour dates read over...

Glastonbury line-up revealed

Shakin_stevens

Glasto doesn't normally tell everyone who is on the bill. This year, thanks to a leak, we can now see who is on some of the main stages. Apparently, this happened because one of the printers used by the Eavis family leaked details.  Not that anyone's really bothered. Most of the tickets have been sold anyway. Also, you can't help but think that the leak may have been intentional in a 'Look! Never mind all this Jay-Z stuff! We've got Shakin' Stevens on!'.

Seriously.

Shakey will be the token 'novelty act' on the Saturday morning. He will be joined by bands that you presumed would be playing at the festival anyway. Basically, there's no surprises whatsoever. Glastonbury is notoriously one of the most conservatively billed festivals on the circuit (just look at the response to the Jay-Z thing with idiots calling for boycotts of the main stage and the like). Anyway, if you wanna see what is on, click over the jump.

Well, one place to catch 'em both for the price of one ticket is the Optimus Alive! festival in Lisbon, Portugal this July.

Dylan is about to embark on a European tour will headline the Festival on Friday July 11 and Neil Young is set to headline the three-day event's closing night on Saturday July 12.

My Bloody Valentine curate incredible ATP in New York

The event will take place at Kutshers Country Club in Monticello, New York and looks like a real cracker!

If My Bloody Valentine headlining wasn't enough, ATP New York unveiled just the beginning of its 30-act lineup. For starters, you get MBV, as well as Thurston Moore performing Psychic Hearts, Tortoise performing Millions Now Living Will Never Die, Shellac, Mogwai and Low. It's an American indie fan's wet-dream!

Underage Festival gives some cred to the kids

Underagefestival For years, kids under 18 have had to put up with school discos, Radio One roadshows and, more recently, the pish that T4 do. A mimed performance from Leona Lewis? What happens if your child has half-decent taste in music? Well, like us, they're probably sneaking into venues anyway... but there is another option - The Underage Festival which has dubbed itself 'The World's First Strictly Under 18s Credible Festival'. So what's on? A load of crap? How about Four Tet? Read over for more...

Primal Scream added to Wax On Live festival bill in Leeds

Primalscream

People think that there's only one big music event in Leeds and it's sponsored by wazz-weak lager. Not true. At the end of May, the exciting looking Wax:On Live is taking place which features a huge variety of acts to tickle your pickle.

Recently added to the bill are Primal Scream, who will join Hercules and Love Affair, Reverend and the Makers, Derrick May, Andrew Weatherall, Friendly Fires, Kila Kella and loads more. The event is taking place at the rather resplendent Lotherton Hall in Leeds.

Mixing up rock, techno and hip hop, this looks like a festival really worth going to. You won't have any of the crowd whinging about the inclusion of rap... unlike some plastic sofa plonked in front of the main stage hummous tossers at one Pilton based fest. Anyway, read over for the line-up for Wax On Live.

Wu-Tang Clan's RZA headlines Manchester's Futuresonic festival

Rza

Headlining Manchester's Futuresonic 2008 is legendary hip-hop producer and leader of The Wu-Tang Clan, The RZA. He'll be appearing in his Bobby Digital guise.

It's fair to say that the RZA has hopped around genres with wild abandon and has become a near mystical figure in the world of music. So, Futuresonic's hip- hop showcase also features electro-hop producer Flying Lotus and Rustie. A roof is gonna be blown skyward.

The show is £16 on the door or free entry with Weekender Wristband. You can get tickets here. For more info, click here. Click over for a dopeass track.

Coming in July: Mighty Boosh Festival

Boosh_fest Could be good...could be...well, not so good - we will have to wait a few months to find out if the Mighty Boosh Festival is a good or bad idea. I suspect the former.

This open air festival takes place on July 5th The Hop Farm in Kent, throwing in all the usual Boosh nonsense, more comedy and  'some of the music world's biggest names' (including some of the cast's favourites) in front of an expected crowd of 30,000 people.

According to Noel Fielding “We’ve never played a music festival before and a comic has never headlined at a festival before so we are seizing the opportunity and doing both!” If you want to take your chances on the line-up or just happen to be a Boosh obsessive, tickets are on sale now.

Massive Attack Meltdown line-up - everything from 60s soul to Japanese electronica

Meltdown We always knew Massive Attack were an eclectic bunch - but if you were in any doubt, check out the line-up for the band's forthcoming Meltdown.

The band is curating this year's festival - and indeed playing two nights (14th and 22nd June). But like all the best Meltdowns, the supporting bill is every bit as interesting. That includes a Gang Of Four / Tom Tom Club double bill (20th June), hippy gods Gong (14th June), Japanese electronic pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra (15th June), Grace Jones (19th June) and a George Clinton / Parliament / Funkadelic night (21st June).

Also of note is the Vangelis Blade Runner soundtrack (mixed by Massive Attack), Terry Callier, Stiff Little Fingers, Martina Topley-Bird, Elbow, various club nights and movie screenings. For all the details, ticket prices and availability, check out the Southbank Meltdown site.

Fancy putting on your own festival but getting someone else to pay for it?

Andrewloogoldham If you're anything like me, you've always fancied putting a festival on. If you're anything like me, you haven't because you're too broke and know that festivals are a huge gamble. So how about getting someone else to pay for it? Well... you might be in luck.

Music fans are to be given the opportunity to stage their happenings across the whole of the country. Tennent’s Mutual will give fans access to £150,000 in order to book acts, as well as choose what locations and venues are used. As organisers, they’ll even be allowed to set an events ticket price, with all revenue being injected back into a central fund.

Fans who register for the new initiative (do it here) which has been developed by the same people who run the T in the Park festival, before June 30th will be granted founder member status. George Kyle, Head of sponsorship at Tennent’s, described the idea as “fresh, creative and most importantly, very different to anything that we have done in the past.”

Stones' svengali Andrew Loog and Babyshambles manager Adrian Hunter will be on hand to offer advice to event organisers. The Tennent’s Mutual shows will run throughout October and November.

Breaking news: Electric Gardens Cancelled.

Electric Gardens, the festival set to take place in Faversham, Kent, for the third year running, has been cancelled.

In a statement on their official website, organisers had this to say: “It's with great sadness that we can officially announce that due to unforeseen circumstances Electric Gardens 2008 has been cancelled. “In February a key player in organising the event was taken to hospital with a life threatening illness. With no foreseeable date as to when he will be allowed home, let alone back to work, we have been forced to remove our interests from Electric Gardens and concentrate on our key businesses.

“We look forward to you supporting these which for ClubClass are our club nights mainly revolving around Radio 1's Big Weekend coming to Maidstone this summer and for Lock n Load the SW4 and Get Loaded in The Park festivals on Clapham Common in August.”

The Lemonhead to play 'Ray' at Truck Festival

Thelemonheads The Lemonheads have been confirmed to headline this year's Truck Festival in Steventon, South Oxfordshire in July. This will be Evan Dando & Co's only UK gig this year, so if you wanna party like it's the mid-nineties, then get out the plastic. Why? Well, the group will perform their indie-fave It's A Shame About Ray in it's entirety. They'll probably play other stuff too.

The festival is set to take place on July 19 and 20 and tickets for the Truck Festival are nearly sold-out.

As well as The Lemonheads, the likes of Small Face Ian McLagan and The Bump Band, MAPS, These New Puritans, and The Television Personalities will play across the event's six stages.

Get Loaded In The Park with The Stooges

Stooges After all these years, The Stooges are finally getting their dues. Last years carnage at various festivals, left people in no doubt - The Stooges are a band unloved for too long. So, this summer sees The Stooges headlining the fifth annual Get Loaded In The Park.

The band who reformed in 2003 featuring original Stooges Ron and Scott Asheton plus Mike Watt on bass and Steve Mackay on Sax will close the August Bank Holiday one day event at Clapham Common on Sunday August 24.

Early Bird tickets will go on sale on Thursday (April 17) from www.getloadedinthepark.com and www.myspace.com/getloadedinthepark

More bands for the 20, 000 capacity event are going to be announced later this week... but we all know that one will be worth watching more than others... the ones with real Shake Appeal.

Harmonia play the Ether Festival

This one has seemingly slipped under the radar... and I've no idea how. Anyway, Friday 18th April (I know, it's not far off is it?) sees the opening of the Ether festival of art and technology. This year's festival features performances by Goldfrapp, Current 93 with Baby Dee... and Harmonia. Yep. Legendary German electronic pioneers back together to bring their weird and wonderful sounds to people with jaws on the floor. There's loads of other things on, but I can't be bothered telling you about them because a) Harmonia is the big news and b) because I can't go, I'm having a sulk. Noel Gallagher talks about the O2 Arena being rubbish, how hip hop is wrong for Glasto and more...

Noel_gallagher_ I've never liked Oasis. Never. Never bought a record. Never going to. So why am I featuring them as a news article? Well, firstly, because Noel Gallagher always has somethin' to say on everything which, secondly, may or may not get your dander up. So what's he chunnering on about now? Well, the Parker from Thunderbirds lookalike has criticised the decision to have a hip hop act as the headline for the Glastonbury Festival.

He reckons that having rapper Jay-Z at the festival is the reason it hasn't sold out this year. He also said the event's organisers had changed things too much and that it was "wrong" to have a hip hop headline act. There were 100,000 tickets sold for Glastonbury on the first day, but in past years all tickets had sold out in a matter of hours. Gallagher said: "If it ain't broke don't fix it. If you start to break it then people aren't going to go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance. Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go 'Kylie Minogue?' I don't know about it. But I'm not having hip hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong." If the world of indie is going to listen to him, then hell, I might start going to Glasto again! More hip-hop please Mr Eavis! More over the jump...

Is Jay-Z ready to pull out of Glasto?

Jayz This is really beginning to bug me. Right. This is the rub. Jay-Z is reportedly ready to pull out of his headline slot at Glastonbury, in favour of performing at the O2 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park instead. If these rumours are true, it seems Jay-Z is ready for the off because he's sick of being made the scapegoat for low sales of Glastonbury tickets this year.

At the time of writing this, tickets are still available for Glastonbury, which normally sells out in minutes. A source (whatever that means) has told The Sun (for what it's worth) that “He hasn’t liked all this talk of how Glastonbury is more urban and hip this year because of his appearance. He feels it’s a bit sad and he’s being used to make a point. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when he was blamed for the lower registrations.”

So why am I so bugged at all of this?

Oasis announce that they're playing a gig for the first time in ages

Oasis_ This news couldn't mean less to me... but some of youse like Oasis, so with that, I'll quit parpin' on and just give you some facts straight-up (no chaser).

Oasis have announced their first gig of 2008.

It will take place at Canada's Virgin Festival Toronto.

Oasis are currently working on their seventh album in Los Angeles.

It will probably sound a lot like their other albums.

Festival Review - Le Beat Bespoke 4, London

LebeatIf you have read any reviews of Le beat Bespoke 4 before now - IGNORE THEM. Why? It was probably written by a London based sycophant who got his ticket for free or worse still, some mod with an interest in self promotion and regurgitating the myths about the scene in an attempt to keep 'the flame' alive. Everything you have read, or will read - except this review - will be wrong.

As I've said previous, I'm keeping The Sonics separate from this review as, well, some of you just won't care as the importance of The Sonics dwarfs a piddly little weekender. In fact, I wouldn't have gone at all if The Sonics weren't on. But go I did and if you're even this far, you're probably curious enough to wonder how it all went down.

The whole weekend promised a shift away from Le Beat Bespoke's usual Mod-In, with an eye firmly on the Garage. Gone were the blokes with women's haircuts and in with blokes with beer bellies getting their kicks to some snarl and fuzz guitar... right?

The Sonics - Live from London

Okay. I've done a great big long review (click here). If you can't be bothered reading all that, watch this video instead as it serves as a shorter... but just as good... snapshot of The Sonics' first show on European soil. Jeez. It's good.

Kraftwerk to do a mini-tour

Before you get too excited, this news is for our American cousins only (or those willing to travel to the US I guess). Kraftwerk, long confirmed for the Coachella music festival (April 25-27) are to play some more shows in the build up to the shindig. The Moog Beatles will appear at Myth in Minneapolis on April 19, the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, Wis., on April 20 and at the Fillmore in Denver on April 23. If you haven't seen them, this is what you can expect.

The Sonics to play Spain at possibly greatest festival line-up ever

Sonics6We told you about The Sonics playing London. The we told you an extra date had been added (rumours are that the second date will see The Hives and The Horrors as support *taps nose*)... so if you ain't got a ticket, what's your excuse?

Well, in a last ditch attempt to get you lazy bones to get down to the greatest rock 'n' roll band who ever walked the planet, The Sonics have been added to the bill of Spanish festival, Primavera Sound. Who else is on? What? The Sonics are all you need surely? If not, highlights at the festival are 808 State, Caribou, De La Soul, Devo, Kool Keith, Holly Golightly, Mary Weiss of The Shangri-las, Notwist, Portishead, Public Enemy performing It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back...  do I have to go on? Festival with Billy Childish, Pete Molinari and more? Where do I sign up?!

Billychildish With Glasto pimping their green arse to almost any good cause and the Isle of Wight fest now brought to you in association with British Telecom, it's nice to see that Lounge on the Farm is sponsored by the spirit of rock 'n' roll. Even though it is in Canterbury. Anyway, Lounge on the Farm has a lip smacking line-up... who?

The stand-outs on the bill are Billy Childish, Art Brut, Pete Molinari and Holly Golightly. Most acts haven't even been announced yet. You want some more? Well, you could try Jon Carter, Sargasso Trio and Kevin Rowland on for size too. All taking place at Merton Farm in Kent from the 11th ‘til the 13th of July.

Tickets for Lounge on the Farm are on sale now priced at early bird rates of £65 for the weekend, (£35 if you’re a child, £140 if you’ve two adults and two children in your party). After that they rise to £85, (£40, £180) respectively, while day tickets are on offer at a basic £35 for adults/£20 for children. There will be a hog roast and cider, too. Click here to visit the official website.

Radiohead refuse to play Glasto because it ain't green enough

Thom_yorke_radiohead Thom Yorke has revealed that Radiohead didn’t want to play Glastonbury this summer because of the lack of a local transport infrastructure around the festival site. In short, it ain't green enough. So, in short(er), STICK THAT FAKE HIPPIES!

He explained: “One of the conditions of the band carrying on touring is that we do everything we can to minimise our impact on the environment. That has included buying two lots of equipment and keeping one in Europe and one in America so we never have to fly our kit around the world again. Another big one is shipping stuff rather than flying it. We also use new technology for our lighting rig."

He added: "One of the interesting things we discovered is how people get to our big shows. A lot of the time people are driving with one or two people in a car and that’s an ecological disaster. What we’re trying to do now is only play in areas that have a public transport infrastructure in place. So that rules out Glastonbury for this year. Maybe we can work out a plan for the future. They’re probably sick of the sight of us anyway.”

Coral, Supergrass, King Creosote and others added to Summer Sundae

Coral Do you like your indiepop psych flavoured? Well, Supergrass and The Coral have been confirmed as the headliners at this year's Summer Sundae Weekender... so... there. Liverpudlian beat combo The Coral will be performing a special acoustic set at the festival. The annual bash takes place at its regular home De Montfort Hall and Gardens, Leicester on August 8-10.

Who else is playing? Simian Mobile Disco, Roisin Murphy, Whitest Boy Alive, Lightspeed Champion, Tom Baxter and King Creosote. Festival Co director Rob Challice said: "Already this year's Summer Sundae Weekender bill is already looking one of the strongest lineups to date with the likes of Supergrass and The Coral. We're no longer the best kept secret of the Summer festival circuit. We are especially pleased that we've secured acts of the moment like Lightspeed Champion, Whitest Boy Alive and Simian Mobile Disco." More to follow no doubt.

Early bird tickets for the festival are on sale now if you click here.

Happy Mondays (and others) to play Lake District

Happymondays The Happy Mondays are to top the bill at a brand new festival taking place in Cumbria this May.

The inaugural Forgotten Valley weekend (who can you forget something that hasn't happened yet?) will also see The Enemy, Reverend and the Makers, Pendulum, The Wombats, New Young Pony Club, Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong also all play over the May Bank Holiday weekend, 23-25th. Be sure to marvel at Shaun Ryder's new dazzling white teeth if you go.

Squeeze to play WOMAD (not just Squeeze I might add...)

Squeeze I've always thought of the World of Music, Arts & Dance Festival, or WOMAD as it's usually called, as deeply un-hip. If anything sums up the yoghurt weaving and hemp wearing community of Britain, it's WOMAD. And, not only that, everytime I say 'WOMAD' I'm reminded of Womack & Womack.

Anyway, this year,  amongst the plethora of 'those acts that are shunted on to Jools Holland's TV show with weird instruments' are some big names. Topping the bill are Squeeze, who've just finished a sell-out UK Arena tour, who will join Roni Size & Reprazent, Finley Quaye, Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Boy George.

The festival, which takes place at Charlton Park, Marmesbury from July 25-27 will also see Eddy Grant performing. More information about tickets and line-up are available from: WOMADshop.com and by telephone: 0845 146 1735 (Lines open Monday-Friday from 10am-6pm for credit/debit card bookings). Big long list of bands can be found over... be warned, some have been highlighted and all of them have their place of origin in brackets.
