Bag an original East German Disco poster

East_germany_2 Salvage experts Trainspotters have dug up a real gem from the former East Germany - a batch of colourful posters for a long-forgotten club.

The club was called Disco and the posters were found in a former Kulturhaus. All are unused, said to be 'excellent to mint condition' and are dated to 1976. Details of the designer aren't known.

The remaining stock has been framed and being offered for sale - you can pick up one of the 61cm x 84cm posters for £210.

Sinister Folk at the BFI

Redbreast

The British folk revival stumbles on as Flipside unearths two obscure, genuinely creepy ‘70s folk tales on Friday 2nd May and plays a few folkie tunes too under the title Sinister Folk.

Robin Redbreast (Play For Today 1970)
Smart urban divorcee Norah gets more than she bargained for when she retreats to a remote house in the country. Toyed with by some very curious locals who know more than they let on, Norah soon finds herself the unwilling participant in shocking traditions both ancient and frightening.

Murrain (Against The Crowd) (ATV 1975)
When a mysterious virus plagues local pigs and a family goes sick, panicking farmers blame a frail old woman - the ‘witch’ that lives up the lane. An idealistic young doctor from the city tries to dispel the rumours. Taut, intelligent, convincing, written by legendary Quatermass creator, Nigel Kneale.

Afterwards, Resonance FM DJs Jonny Trunk (Trunk Records) and Nervous Stephen (Murri) will be spinning 'dark folk ditties' on black vinyl in Benugo. Tickets for the whole event cost £8.60.

Club: Round Our Gaff picture review

RoundourgaffYou were told that one of the Electric Roulette writers was to bomb down to London to play at the Round Our Gaff club. Well, seeing as it was in London, straws were drawn and Mof got the short one. Thankfully, the night was good, even if the city it was in was arse.

Click over for more incriminating evidence.

Clubs: Round Our Gaff, London

RoundourgaffIt's no mistake that the flyer on the right of this article features the words 'Electric Roulette'. Why? Well, one of the Electric Roulette scribes is playing rekkids down in Camden for a rare trip South.

Which one? Well, if you don't know, it'll be a surprise for you. If you do know which one, be sure to say hello. Suffice to say, there will be crazed garage, bug-eyed soul, body jerking Ye-Ye, mind frying psych, sleazy instros and whatever else takes the fancy five minutes before going on.

The night is Round Our Gaff and takes place this weekend (Saturday April 26th) and you'll get to see The Ladies of the Manor playing electro and punk as well as live bands playing live sets. Notably, a band called Scanners and another band called The Gin Riots.

It starts at 8pm and finishes late, and you can find it Upstairs at The Enterprise, 2 Haverstock Hill, Camden, London. Fiver in if you've got a flyer. Check the website for superfluous info.

Official licensed fac 51 Hacienda t-shirts

Hacienda1

The Hacienda is long gone (replaced by an ugly block of flats bearing the same name), but nostalgia for the club grows by the year - with these officially licensed fac 51 Hacienda t-shirts likely to find a substantial market.

Not just official licensed either, officially worn too - New Order's Peter Hook had one on his back during the recent Manchester vs Cancer charity gig. Four designs initially available (including the two above), all with familiar Peter Saville artwork, all limited edition (once they're gone, they're gone) and printed onto 100 per cent cotton shirts.

You can pick them up online via the site below, selling for £29.99 each.

The main room has gone a bit too indie/Britpop these days (a waste of that flashing dancefloor), but you're guaranteed top notch 60s Soul, Northern, Jazz, Garage, Psych and Freakbeat in Room 2 from DJs Gav Needham & Gav Arno. All on original 45s naturally.

Admission is £5 advance and the night runs from 10pm until 3am. If you want to know more, check out the website.

Sweet But Deadly wanna give you your kicks...

SweetbutdeadlyLive in London and wanna get your kicks? Chances are, you've been down to the Dirty Water and found 'em... but what about having a change? Is that possible? Yup. Course it is!

A collective of DJs who go under the Sweet But Deadly monicker pride themselves on playing on that sweet and deadly music from "1955 to 1972" from mods, to rockers, to soulies, to swirlies... everyone gonna have a good time okay?

So where are these cats spinning? Well, as they're in demand and organising all kinds of debauchery, I advise that you click here and find out for yourself... if you need a tip, Beatrocket looks good.

Clubs: The Cockroach Club

SurgensThe best thing about garage nights is that they tend to feature some fuckin' great bands sandwiched between the sleazoid vinyl treats. Peterborough's hotspot, The Cockroach Club is no exception. Promising to bring the best in new and old garage and surf, not to mention psych, surf, rockabilly and "good old dirty rock 'n' roll", this promises to be one skuzzy night out.

'Hey man. You were talkin' 'bout live acts too...' ...if you're going down to The Cockroach club on February 2nd, the you'll get the chance to catch the demented sounds of the brilliant Surgens who have found fans in Mark Lamarr and Mark Radcliffe. Okay, I'm not called Mark, but I fuckin' love 'em all the same. The Surgens are a firing mix of twisted country, depraved blooz and snarling rockin' garage. Click here to visit their MySpace page. Feb also sees some fuzz from The Psych-O-Bombs (who do a cookin' version of Action Woman). Click here to see them too. Who woulda thought that Peterborough was a hub of crazed garage action? There's me thinking it was a real ale town.

B-52s do one-off DJ gig at London's Punk club

B52s_pic I can't forgive Love Shack easily, but I do love a good chunk of the B-52s' past work. And now the band is back, playing a one-off DJ gig at the Punk club in London's Soho.

The date is Friday 18th January and it's part of the Easy Lover night. All surviving members of the band will be spinning discs - Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider, Keith Strickland and Cindy Wilson that is - with an 'eclectic' set promised, ranging from electronica to funk and rock. And probably a few tracks from the band's forthcoming comeback album Funplex, which you can read about here and buy from March 24th.

Clubs: Mrs Boon’s Tea Party in Manchester

Mrs_boon_2

Tea and cake is the new drug on the town - and the best place to find it is at Mrs Boon’s Tea Party in Manchester.

It's monthly tea party in the centre of Manchester, specifically at the Koffee Pot on Hilton Street, with Mrs Boon (wife of Inspiral Carpets' Clint Boon) serving up her homemade cakes plus tea and coffee in old school crockery and to be honest, in an old school establishment. And for your soundtrack, Clint Boon himself will be spinning tunes on a 1960s record player.

The next one is on Friday 21st December, with additional guests including the legendary Frank Sidebottom and a brass band to get everyone in the mood for Christmas. We'll certainly see you down there. Admission is £5 (which includes those refreshments), with the doors open from 4pm. Mine's a slice of chocolate cake - I'm trying to give...honest.

Clubs: Hot Rats, Manchester

HotratsMates. Cheeky fuckers aren't they? They never ring you unless they're after something. It's a bit of a shameless one this in that case. I used to DJ with a buncha lads at a night in Manchester and now they've got a night called Hot Rats in Chorlton (which is South Manchester... don't worry, you can get a bus there easy enough from town... you'll know you're there when you see shops selling nothing but sandals and lentils) which plays folk you can dance to, prog and pretty much anything that falls under the psychedelic umbrella.

DJs at the night are Goff, John MacKenzie, Lee Janda, Mik Mak Mok and the sublime Johnny Alpha... and apparently they're having guests too. Get down there with your Keane records and clear the place out! Failing that, offer 'em some eco-friendly Es and you'll have a blast.

Clubs: The Rubber Room, Nottingham

Rubberroom

Fancy getting down to some grimy garage, rude rockabilly, sleazoid surf, rockin' R'n'B and wild tittyshakers? Then you might wanna pay a visit to The Rubber Room! This kinda fetish night dribbles at the sight of black plastic (of the 7inch circular variety) and is a monthly club night held at the Bodega Social, Pelham Street, Nottingham, every second Friday of the month.

It's free in and kicks off at 10.30pm, finishing in the small hours when the beer stops you dancing. It's an evening of delinquent rock 'n' roll in all it's many guises. The Rubber Room gang say; "Calling all hipsters, flipster and finger poppin daddies, it's the return of The Rubber Room - four hours of the strangest and most deranged sounds ever cut to vinyl, from red hot rock n' roll and rockabilly to oddball fifties novelty 45's, sixties garage punk and psychedelia, seventies new york punk and beyond! Allkiller sounds, no fillers!" Sounds good. They have a Rubber Room Christmas special on December 14th.

Have you been to Dulcimer yet?

Dulcimer_2In Manchester, there isn't much going on that hasn't been sullied by the wading in of various soulless club promoters, kicking out those that love in favour of those that need attention. Thankfully, a breath of independent air has breezed in and ghosted in at the back post... and that place is the wonderful Dulcimer.

Dulcimer, sitting cross legged and sending good vibrations in Chorlton, fuses folk with psych with prog with soul with garage with... whatever takes the fancy of the discerning ears that grace this permanent psychedelic haven. If you like a bit of grime with your psych, the weekly (and free) Hot Rats is the place for you... or maybe you like your music liveanddirect? Buddy, Dulcimer kicks the snake oil vendors to the kerb and offers great gigs in its great setting. Coming up this week is a spot with Welsh folk legend Heather Jones (£7)... and if previous gigs with Dando Shaft and The Junipers are anything to go by, everyone is in for a winner. I've not even mentioned the selection of amazing ales...

So where can I find? A £6 taxi from the city centre should head to 567 Wilbraham Rd, Chorlton, Manchester, M21 0AE... and watch out for David Crosby at the top of the stairway to heaven... got knows what he's got up his sleeve... Click here to visit the Dulcimer website.

Lee Hazlewood tribute to take place at The Social

Leehazlewood

Sonic Cathedral's 'Some Velvet Morning' club night at The Social (near Oxford Circus tube stop) is to pay tribute to Lee Hazlewood (the coolest man who ever lived) later this month.

Taking place on October 29, the evening will see live sets from Dot Allison, Strange Idols, The Tamborines and The Left Outsides as well as some secret guests to be revealed on the night (a tenner on Jarvis Cocker making an appearance). A highlight of the evening will be the premiere listen of Hazlewood's last ever recording; a collaboration with Icelandic quartet Amiina.

Entry to Some Velvet Morning is free, but Sonic Cathedral will be raising money on the night for Hazlewood’s chosen charity, the Globe, Arizona, branch of the Salvation Army. For more details about Sonic Cathedral nights and records, including this one, click here www.Soniccathedral.co.uk

Style bible The Look becomes club night

Look_club If you don't own a copy of The Look by Paul Gorman, you really should. It's just about the best book around on the modern history of fashion, from the 1950s to the present day. And the reasoning behind that is soon to be turned into a monthly club night in London.

The Look at Lost Society kicks off on Thursday June 7th and then the first Thursday of every month. The music policy is down as eclectic - that means the best of all genres and all eras from DJs Pippa Brooks & Max Karie and Paul Gorman, with the first night also throwing in performances by All About Eve Babitz & My Lady Jane, plus a special guest in the form of Dexys' legend Kevin Rowland, who will be "singing, DJing and raising the roof". That means he might sing the odd intro - this isn't a gig for the man!

Admission is just £5 and it runs from 8pm until late.

The Look At Lost Society
697 Wandsworth Road
London SW4 3JF.
Tickets £5.

The Buzzcocks to headline Le Beat Bespoke weekender

Buzzcocks_1 The Bank Holiday Easter weekend sees the return of Le Beat Bespoke. The weekender is MOJO-endorsed this year, and is set to celebrat all things rock’n’roll, soul and psych.

Le Beat Bespoke 3 is headlined by The Buzzcocks and Vincent Vincent And The Villains this year, alongside Scot mods The Five Aces and Dublin garagers The Urges. Of course, this weekender won't be just groups as you can peruse the record stalls, a pop-art furniture market and late night bars and go-go dancers. It would seem that Le Beat Bespoke is moving away from the mod, and towards a more garage punk flavour this year. Le Beat Bespoke is on April 6-8 at 229 Great Portland Street, London, W1. See over for a short and messy trailer for the event.

Club night: Friction in Liverpool

FrictionIf you happen to be in the Liverpool area, it's well worth making the effort to drop into Friction.

Friction is the work of Will Sergeant, probably best-known as the guitarist in Liverpool band Echo and the Bunnymen. Early doors it's ambient tunes, but when club hours start, it's a mix of 60s soul and beat, psych and the odd indie and punk classic.

The night runs every Thursday at Korova, 39-41 Fleet Sreet, Liverpool, L1 4AR. it starts around 8pm and runs until late.

Clubs: The Revolutionary Freaked Out Fuzz Club, York

Revol Decent sixties nights are hard to come by. They're either po-faced mod nights that are as much about what type of suit you're wearing as the music, or worse still, people in hippie wigs dancing to Brown Eyed Girl. Well, kicking the trend, and tucked away in the belly of a cinema in York is the marvellously monickered Revolutionary Freaked Out Fuzz Club.

A mix of garage punk, psych sees them claim that it's the only place you can "get your groove on to Howlin' Wolf, Captain Beefheart, James Brown, Little Milton, The Sonics & Bobbie Gentry on the same night!" They also show cult movies like 'The Trip' to keep your eyes entertained. It certainly looks like a night that is all inclusive, and more about having a good time to great records rather than chin stroking. The next Fuzz Club is on Saturday Feb 24th, doors at about 8. It's £3 on the door, and can be found at City Screen Basement on Coney Street. Tune in, and freak the fuck out!

For directions and sound, click here to see the Fuzz Club MySpace site.

Legendary soul allnighter ends

6ts_cd_1 Probably the longest-running (and most famous modern-day) northern soul allnighter - the 6Ts 100 Club Allnighter - is no more. The night is being forced to close due to a change of promoter, who is extending "normal" hours until 3am - leaving little time for any late-night shenanigans.

That's the band news, but here's the good news - the 6TS Rhythm & Soul Society, which has been running nights since 1979, will continue to put on an allnighter. It will now be at "Jack’s" club at London Bridge for the next event - on Saturday 10th March from 10pm - 7am. The club is a short walk from London Bridge tube and mainline station which is on the Thameslink line and easily accessible from the north and south of London.

And if you get nostalgic for the 100 Club, the 6TS society is planning an occasional number of events there, but within the clubs 9pm - 3am opening hours. If you want to keep updated on the latest news about the night, check out www.6ts.info.
