Manchester noir: Hell Is A City (1960) gets a DVD reissue
Thought film noir was a US-only thing? You haven’t seen Hell Is A City.
The movie, which dates back to 1960, is one of those minor cult classics that hardly ever gets a a showing on the big or small screen. Shame really, as it’s a tidy little thriller.
Made by Hammer and set in and around a particularly grim-looking Manchester (which is one of the big selling points), it stars Stanley Baker as a tough, dedicated police inspector on the trail of a man on the run. A man who he got put away for 14 years for robbery, but escaped after clubbing a warder to death to escape. All of that with a marriage on the rocks working in the background too.
Best of all? The company behind it has released these rather cool stills to promote it. Marvellous. If you want the film, we might have a review soon. If you can’t wait, you can pre-order ahead of the 8 October release date for £11.
