David Bowie Is – the book of the forthcoming V&A exhibition now available to order
There’s a huge David Bowie exhibition being planned for the V&A – and the book that accompanies it is already available to order. It is called David Bowie Is.
The first international Bowie retrospective runs from 23 March to 28 July, charting Bowie’s lift and career courtesy of unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archive – everything from handwritten lyrics to original costumes (up to 60), set designs and instruments will be on display. Iconic photography by the likes of Herb Ritts, Helmut Lang, Brian Duffy and Terry O’Neill will also be on show, as will, of course, video footage of the man. Music too we suspect.
As for the book, that’s listed as being a ‘deluxe’ publication in hardback and covering 288 pages, tracing Bowie’s career from its beginnings in London, through the breakthroughs of Space Oddity and Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and on to his impact on the larger international tradition of twentieth-century avant-garde art.
Essays by V&A curators on Bowie’s London, image, and influence on the fashion world, are joined by pieces from Christopher Frayling, Mark Kermode and Philip Hoare on film; Howard Goodall on musicology; Camille Paglia on gender and decadence; and Jon Savage on Bowie’s relationship with William Burroughs and his fans.
The date for the book is 4 March 2013, but you can get a discounted pre-order in now for £31.50.
