DVD Review: Permissive (1970)

When the British Film Institute was formed back in 1933, I suspect it wasn't for the preservation of movies like Permissive. But here it is, courtesy of the Flipside offshoot - and I, for one, am glad it is.

Let's keep a tight reign on expectations here though - Permissive is a low budget movie (just £20,000 to film), it has acting that's often amateur at best and the plot is as thin as tracing paper. So why is this groupie flick worth your heard earned cash? Well....

Flaming Lips release cover of entire Dark Side of the Moon album

Taking on any Pink Floyd is a challenge, taking on an entire album is plain madness. Especially when that album is Dark Side of the Moon. But the Flaming Lips has done just that.

Yes, from today and from iTunes, you can pick up Floyd's '73 classic from the always-interesting Lips, assisted on most tracks by Henry Rollins. Yes, Henry Rollins doing Pink Floyd. Never thought I'd type that. I've just done a preview via iTunes - and from that I can safely say it's odd, interesting, occasionally rubbish, but with flashes of genius. I'll be downloading the full thing later.

Ever seen the New York Doll movie? You really should - you'll even catch a snippet of the clip below, the New York Dolls doing Jet Boy on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1973.

Famously described as 'mock rock' by host Bob Harris, this appearance on the late night music show probably planted the seeds of punk in the UK. Indeed, many of the (in)famous talking heads in that New York Doll flick say as much.

NME Radio goes nationwide on DAB - if you still listen to DAB

Does anyone still listen to DAB radio? In an age where internet radio caters for every whim and the likes of Spotify and Napster offer just about everything on-demand, do you really want a music magazine setting the agenda? If you do, welcome to NME Radio.

From this morning (and after a London-based trial), NME Radio is on DAB and according to the mag's website, it should offer all you would expect of NME 2009, along with the best sessions recorded in their studios throughout 2009, including Kasabian, Bat For Lashes, The Temper Trap and The XX.
