Jimi Hendrix - Sex Tape?

Hendrix First he's supposed to have recorded a version of the Welsh national anthem, and now, Jimi Hendrix is supposed to be in a sex tape. Yep. You heard. Vivid Entertainment plans to release what it claims is a sex tape featuring the legendary axeman.

The film shows a man in the nip, who resembles Hendrix, wearing a bandana and having sex with two brunettes in a dimly-lit room. His face appears on screen for only a few seconds, while in other segments, there are flashes of his profile. The film has no audio, reports The New York Times.

Vivid Entertainment, a large maker of mucky flicks, has created a 45-minute DVD, called 'Jimi Hendrix - The Sex Tape' that combines 11 minutes of sex footage with a retrospective of Hendrix's career in the '60s. Vivid, if you're wondering, are the company that put out the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee vid back in the 90s. This Jimi tape will retail at $39.95.

Of course, there are loads of people disputing the fact that this is Jimi at all...

Book - All That Glitters by Pearl Lowe

Allthatglitters Remember Pearl Lowe, frontwoman for Britpoppers Powder? Can't blame you if you don't... but it matters not. Pearl is a woman with a few strings to her bow... musician, fashion model, drugs hoover, friend to the stars, designer... and now, writer.

Lowe, wife of Supergrass drumsmith, Danny Goffey, has lived a life worth writing about. She was an attractive lady with a glamorous career in rock 'n' roll. During her most famous period, Pearl was convinced that she would die due to the trappings of pop-fame. Or her husband's fame at least. Between gargantuan binges, a toddler swallowing an E at a party after finding it on the floor and 'wife swap' allegations concerning Jude Law, Lowe felt it was time to sort her life out.

This is a book that is pure trash... but maybe it's okay to like it as it's about someone in a guitar band. Just be thankful no-one gave it the title of 'Highs and Lowe'. Click here to buy. [MG]

Roulette Pin-Ups - Nico

Nico

Who?

Born Christa Päffgen, but known as Nico. This Bavarian bombshell hawked her cheekbones around the Velvet Underground, as well as making her own unsettling records. Warhol superstar and model, Nico could make you cry with one icy pout.

Where can you find her?

Crack dens, Warhol's factory, in bed, in front of a camera, gettin' up to no good on the dark side of the tracks. Don't matter none, every single person is noticing her wherever she go.

Style

Ice-maiden. Sharp lines on well constructed bones. That glare... man... she gives me the chills. Sexed beatnik. Glam queen of seedy trash.

Quote

"Frozen kiss by the fountain, running into the sea where shadows choose their horrors, designed for music."

Roulette?

Elektrischer Untergrund.

Interview with Mike and The Ravens

Ravens Some time ago, I interviewed a band of misfits called Mike and The Ravens. Now, the group, come from a time that me and you couldn't imagine. A world when rock 'n' roll was brand new... a world where some mop-top scousers hadn't decided to take over the world... yup, The Ravens were there at the first shoot of rock 'n' roll... and they wanted to make it louder and faster. Mike Brassard & Co were proto-garage... and boy, do I love 'em!

A couple of years ago, a couple of records sneaked out starring the Ravens. First up was the Heart So Cold (Vol1) which featured killer skate tunes from the “North Country 60’s Scene”, then the no-filler of ‘Nevermore’ comp of Mike & The Ravens cuts. With the Raven’s classic line-up of Mike Brassard (vocals), Steve Blodgett (rhythm guitar), Bo Blodgett (lead guitar), Brian Lyford (bass), Peter Young (drums) readying a brand new album, I thought I'd dig up the old interview to share with you.

Albert Hoffman 1906 -2008

Albert_hoffman Albert Hofmann, the Swiss scientist who synthesized Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), has passed away aged 102 years old.

Hofmann joined the pharmaceutical-chemical department of Sandoz Laboratories in Basel and began studying the medicinal plant squill and the fungus ergot as part of a program to purify and recreate active constituents for use as medicine. While researching lysergic acid derivatives, Hofmann first synthesized LSD-25 in 1938. It was set aside for five years, until April 16, 1943, when Hofmann decided to take another look at it.

While re-synthesizing the LSD, he accidentally consumed a small sample and of course, found out about its hugely powerful effects. Three days later, on April 19, Hofmann deliberately consumed 250 micrograms of LSD before his bicycle ride home. This was followed by a series of self-experiments conducted by Hofmann and his colleagues. He said "I believe that if people would learn to use LSD's vision-inducing capability more wisely, under suitable conditions, in medical practice and in conjunction with meditation, then in the future this problem child could become a wonderchild."  Rock 'n' roll was waiting with open arms.

V&A offers exclusive Supremes Love Child t-shirts

Lovechild

In 1968, The Supremes had something of a makover - ditching the ball gowns for 'street' styling and going for a grittier sound for the Love Child album. And you can get that look with the V&A's exclusive Love Child t-shirt.

Based on the top worn by Diana Ross on that album sleeve, the t-shirt is being made available in limited quantities by the V&A to coincide with The Story Of The Supremes exhibition being held at the museum.

You can pre-order now, with the shirts shipping from mid-May. Could be one of the t-shirts to be seen in this summer - and it retails in various sizes for just £18.

Beginners guide to... Gram Parsons

Gram_parsons Why bother?

Gram Parson's legacy is a blighted one. He invented country rock as we know it, which was then stolen and plundered by the likes of The Eagles and Poco. That doesn't mean you should dismiss him. Far from it. Gram's take on old time country could switch you on to the originals, which will improve your life no end. On top of that, you get to dig some of the greatest country tunes ever made.

Essential purchase

To be honest, it's difficult to choose just one. Both of Gram's solo LPs, 'GP' and 'Grievous Angel' are masterpieces. However, for a starting point, the Flying Burrito Brothers' 'The Gilded Palace of Sin' is your best bet. This album saw Gram at his most focused... and possibly at his most sober... leaving you with a document of firebrand country and rock 'n' roll which will leave your hair on end and your heart well and truly broken. It's also available as a twofer coupled with 'Burrito Deluxe'.

Beck to play UK shows

Beck will play two English shows at the beginning of July in preparation for his appearance at O2 Wireless Festival. So I guess that's three. Well, he's doing two before the festival. He'll appear at Southampton's Guildhall on July 1 and Manchester Apollo on July 2. Now, check him out doing Debra. It's oddly brilliant.

Glastonbury line-up revealed

Shakin_stevens

Glasto doesn't normally tell everyone who is on the bill. This year, thanks to a leak, we can now see who is on some of the main stages. Apparently, this happened because one of the printers used by the Eavis family leaked details.  Not that anyone's really bothered. Most of the tickets have been sold anyway. Also, you can't help but think that the leak may have been intentional in a 'Look! Never mind all this Jay-Z stuff! We've got Shakin' Stevens on!'.

Seriously.

Shakey will be the token 'novelty act' on the Saturday morning. He will be joined by bands that you presumed would be playing at the festival anyway. Basically, there's no surprises whatsoever. Glastonbury is notoriously one of the most conservatively billed festivals on the circuit (just look at the response to the Jay-Z thing with idiots calling for boycotts of the main stage and the like). Anyway, if you wanna see what is on, click over the jump.

Unreleased Byrds material soon!

Byrds06a Like The Byrds? Well, you'll be pleased to learn that previously unreleased archive material from the notorious Bryd brothers is  due for release soon.

A recording of an appearance at the Royal Albert Hall in London '71 (the Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons line-up) is to be released in June by Sundazed.

McGuinn has told uncut.co.uk that the recording came from his private collection – and that more releases of a similar kind would probably follow it.

New Releases, 28th April, with Peter Stringfellow

ShandystringfellowA big hello to all you Electric Roulette readers... especially the ladies. Are you feeling sexy? I'm only kidding! I'm not like this all the time... unless you want me to be... you cheeky girls!

Of course, I'm Peter Stringfellow. I am wonderful, with a perfect physique, very charming, rich and look like Jude Law. Har! Just kidding again. You may not know it, but I'm actually a very hilarious man. Naturally, being the owner of a club, I have to know a lot about music and the hit parade, which is probably why the Roulette gang (all men sadly) asked me to do this week's reviews.

So, let's crack on! Did someone say crack?! Oooh, you are naughty! I'll spank you if you keep this up you naughty things...

Win The Who's Magic Bus - which is actually a VW camper van

Magic_bus

The Who - in conjunction with the Teenage Cancer Trust - is currently running a competition to win The Who's Magic Bus - and it is a real bus.

Well, it's actually an original (but customised) Volkswagen T1 panel van from 1965, signed by both Roger Daltrey (patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust), and Pete Townshend.

You have to pay £5 to enter (with proceeds going to the charity) and answer a ridiculously easy question. And as a bonus, all entrants get a free download of a previously unreleased live performance of The Who's 'Magic Bus' performed during the International Bus Meeting in Hannover in October 2007. If you are feeling lucky, the link below takes you to the band's competition page.

Numark TTi USB/iPod Turntable - vinyl to MP3 for idiots (like us)

Numark_ipod

Never mind plugging a deck into a computer and loading up a pile of software - the Numark TTi USB Turntable with iPod Dock makes it all redundant.

Well, if you have an iPod that is. That's because it has an iPod dock, recording your vinyl tunes straight to the miniature player. Or if you want to tinker with the audio quality, you can still hook it up to the PC (to the USB port) and load up one of the three types of software sold with the deck.

The turntable itself is belt-drive, with playback at 33 or 45 and line-level RCA outputs (with built-in phono pre-amp). Available now for £149.

Sinister Folk at the BFI

Redbreast

The British folk revival stumbles on as Flipside unearths two obscure, genuinely creepy ‘70s folk tales on Friday 2nd May and plays a few folkie tunes too under the title Sinister Folk.

Robin Redbreast (Play For Today 1970)
Smart urban divorcee Norah gets more than she bargained for when she retreats to a remote house in the country. Toyed with by some very curious locals who know more than they let on, Norah soon finds herself the unwilling participant in shocking traditions both ancient and frightening.

Murrain (Against The Crowd) (ATV 1975)
When a mysterious virus plagues local pigs and a family goes sick, panicking farmers blame a frail old woman - the ‘witch’ that lives up the lane. An idealistic young doctor from the city tries to dispel the rumours. Taut, intelligent, convincing, written by legendary Quatermass creator, Nigel Kneale.

Afterwards, Resonance FM DJs Jonny Trunk (Trunk Records) and Nervous Stephen (Murri) will be spinning 'dark folk ditties' on black vinyl in Benugo. Tickets for the whole event cost £8.60.

Mojo's Paul Weller love-in

Mojo_2 We all love Paul Weller. Actually, that's a lie - the majority of the Electric Roulette team loathe him, but in the interests of balance I like him - even if he hasn't made a decent record in a decade.

Anyway, Mojo this month has gone Wellertastic, with one of those never-ending interviews to 'celebrate' his 50th birthday and offering up a Weller-inspired CD that's worth the cover price alone - including the likes of the Small Faces, William Bell, Gil Scott-Heron, The Staple Singers and Bob Marley.

Oh yes - there's also a Prince Buster and Bobby Bland feature, along with the usual smugness. Out now.

Mojo's dull website

Electronic pioneer, Tristam Cary, 1925-2008

Tristram English electronic music pioneer Tristram Cary has died in Australia. He was 82.

While working as a radar engineer for the Royal Navy during World War II, he independently developed his own conception of electronic and tape music, and is regarded as amongst the earliest pioneers of electronic music. Following the war he created one of the first electronic music studios, later traveling around Europe to meet the small numbers of other early pioneers of electronic music and composition.

He is the man behind 'Continuum For Tape' as well as soundtrack work, such as doing music for Doctor Who, the score for The Ladykillers, Quatermass and the Pit and Blood from the Mummy's Tomb.

Review - The Shortwave Set 'Replica Sun Machine'

ShortwavesetIf you look hard enough, you can find hundreds of bands trying to recreate the sounds of 1966 - 1970. Most of these bands are looking to make a punky racket like The Seeds or aiming for the tripped out folk of Pentangle. Shortwave Set aren't your average revivalists. In fact, I'm not sure they're revivalists at all.

Shortwave Set, clearly owing a lot to the 60s and 70s, are avoiding the usual influences and seemingly gunning for something that lies between bubblegum psych of Mark Wirtz or Curt Boettcher and mixing it with something very modern indeed.

It's pop Jim, but not as we know it.

Patti Smith and MBV's Kevin Shields collaboration gets release

Patti_smith_1978 Patti Smith and Kevin Shields' live collaboration on 'The Coral Sea' will finally get its release this summer, when it comes out as a 2CDer on their own PASK label.

The album, due out on July 11, features two live performances from June 22, 2005 and September 12, 2006, both at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. Both feature Smith spoken-word from her 1996 book 'The Coral Sea', a homage to her close friend and legendary photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Shields provides an instrumental backing to Smith's performance, using guitar and his infamous bank of effects. The two shows are said to have a "different stylistic approach". The album is nearly two hours in length. Heavy.

The Prisoners Rare & Unissued reissued on CD by Big Beat

Prisoners_rare Originally released (in limited numbers) on vinyl in 1988 on Billy Childish’s Hangman label, Rare & Unissued by The Prisoners gets a welcome reissue this week from Big Beat through Ace Records.

Rare & Unissued brings together all the hard-to-find recordings by the 'pioneers of modern day garage', but is slightly different to the original vinyl release. That's because Ace has already reissued some of the album's tracks on previous Prisoners reissues - so rather than offer duplicate tracks, there's two previously undiscovered cuts - the instrumental Unbeliever (fast) from the Wisermiserdemelza sessions and a take of Love Me Lies recorded live in a studio some time before the its appearance at those sessions.

Also added are two cuts recorded at a demo session in 1984 which appeared on various small run compilations – Joe 90 and a version Hush - and new sleevnotes, with contributions from band members. You can pick it up now from Amazon, which is selling it for £8.98.

The Greatest 100 Greatest List Ever

Bestofdetroit Stumbled across this whilst flagrantly abusing internet privileges at work - The Detroit Metro Time's "100 Greatest Detroit Songs Ever", an untouchably hip Top 100 compiled by the Deetroit rag's staff late last year. Convention dictates that Top 100 Records Lists a la Mojo Magazine, Q Magazine, The Guardian Guide et al lists are arbitrary, predictable, dull etc etc - this list, however, is dynamite from top to bottom. Tons of Psyche-Soul (Black Merda, Funkadelic, Dennis Coffey), Motown (Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves), garage rock (Stooges, ? & The Mysterians, MC5), plus the occasional groundbreaking techno or hip-hop track...a genuinely fascinating journey through the Motor City's back catalogue, and a forceful reminder of how consistently this city has produced incredible music since the mid 1900s. Go dig! (Also in the Detroit Metro Times this week: "Road Rage - Mayor and council skirmish over Livernois makeover".) PF

Uncut - Midlife crisis

Uncutcover You have to worry about Uncut. They still get all of a quiver when they talk about drugs. In a recent article which interviewed Charlatans' singer Tim Burgess, they giddily reported that "huge amounts of drugs were the reason their albums in the mid-90's took so long to produce." Burgess added: "I'd be running marathons in my spare time. There's nothing quite like running a marathon when you're off your head on E. I look back on those times with great fondness."

I'm not sure this is exactly news worthy. I mean, what next? Menswear all got stoned together once? A lot of us take drugs on the weekend and get up to all kindsa nonsense. Running a marathon is a bit weird I'll grant you... but seriously... c'mon Uncut. Stop acting like Q magazine and remember what it's like to kick out the jams. At the minute, they're sounding a bit like a sad old uncle who gets excited when he hears that his nephews and nieces are doing bongs. Still, I suppose that's what you get for hanging around the NME.

Clubs: Round Our Gaff, London

RoundourgaffIt's no mistake that the flyer on the right of this article features the words 'Electric Roulette'. Why? Well, one of the Electric Roulette scribes is playing rekkids down in Camden for a rare trip South.

Which one? Well, if you don't know, it'll be a surprise for you. If you do know which one, be sure to say hello. Suffice to say, there will be crazed garage, bug-eyed soul, body jerking Ye-Ye, mind frying psych, sleazy instros and whatever else takes the fancy five minutes before going on.

The night is Round Our Gaff and takes place this weekend (Saturday April 26th) and you'll get to see The Ladies of the Manor playing electro and punk as well as live bands playing live sets. Notably, a band called Scanners and another band called The Gin Riots.

It starts at 8pm and finishes late, and you can find it Upstairs at The Enterprise, 2 Haverstock Hill, Camden, London. Fiver in if you've got a flyer. Check the website for superfluous info.

Stevie Winwood to play intimate show in London

Winwood Stevie Winwood is stupidly talented. He was the main boy in the Spencer Davis Group, he was in Traffic and Blind Faith and then, he went solo and did some awful 80s records. Anyway, he's announced a one-off club date in London, to take place on May 19th.

The show at the Scala will be a showcase for his forthcoming album 9 Lives, which features friend, drinking buddy and collaborator Eric Clapton on the first single 'Dirty City' out just before on May 5.

Winwood, backed by a full band, is also going to go on a Northern American tour with Tom Petty. Tickets for the one-off London show go onsale Thursday April 24.

Beatles get their own day in Liverpool

Beats Liverpool, in places, is like Disneyland for Beatle fans. Fair enough. Now, the Fab Four are to get their own day called, Beatles Day. Beatles Day lands on July 10th this year and has been set aside for fund-raising activities for the Alder Hey Children's Hospital Imagine Appeal with 20,000 moptop wigs being made and businesses encouraged to decorate with Beatley things, as well as radio stations encouraged to play more Beatles-related tracks.

Beatles' Day will culminate with a special gig at the local Liverpool Arena with 'Imagine - The Concert'. The gig, clearly named after a solo track by Lennon, will be hosted by Ricky Tomlinson and will see an array of artists cover the Fabs classic songs. The city will also see Beatles tribute bands play on rooftops. Why the use of 'Imagine'?

Nas may well begin with 'N', but it's a different 'N' word that he's been causing a stink with

Nas

Nas has caused a bit of a row with a new track that uses the N word quite a lot, taken from his new LP, the controversially-titled 'Nigger'.

Nas titled the album under attack from both his label and black community groups campaigning to rid the word ‘nigger’ from hip-hop. The long player is - despite rumours suggesting Def Jam would drop Nas if he didn’t change its title - scheduled for release on July 1st and a couple of days back ‘Be a Nigger Too’ was leaked onto the internet.

"The real niggers are back on the radio", the track begins, with the main refrain of "I'm a nigger, he's a nigger, she's a nigger. we some niggers, wouldn't you like to be a nigger too?" Then, adding fuel to the fire, Nas makes reference to “kike niggers”, “spic niggers”, “guinea niggers” and “chink niggers” before spitting "they like to strangle niggers, blame a nigger, shoot a nigger, hang a nigger. Still, you wanna be a nigger too? True".

Is Nas reclaiming a word from racists or is it keeping it in currency? This is a debate that has rumbled on for years... what do you think? Hear the track over the jump.
