Electric Roulette Top Picks
Occasionally at Electric Roulette, we like to impose what we've been listening to down your throat. Of course, it only serves as a guide and hopefully, it will let you in on a few LPs you've ummed and aahed about for a while. I'm sure you, dear reader, like to force your musical opinions on others too... why else would you be reading?
Anyway, here's a list of what's been rocking the boat recently. Read over for September's Top 10. Feel free to share your top picks of the moment in the comments section! We'd love to hear from you.
1. V/A - Brazil '70 (LP) - The latest foray into Latin psych from Soul Jazz sees the bands that made up the fall out of the Tropicalia era. There's no Os Mutantes, but there is a whole host of new bands to sink your teeth into like the wonderful Novos Baianos and more! Gal Costa and Gilberto Gil make another appearance, with Costa on her usual fine form.
2. Nancy and Lee (LP) - Of course, Lee Hazlewood's recent passing saw fans diving into their record collections to dust down their worn copies of Trouble is a Lonesome Town. Nancy and Lee is still his finest pop moment, with stunning renditions of Sand and Summer Wine... and who could forget the weirdness that is Some Velvet Morning? Amazing LP... if you don't own it, get it now, if you do, go listen to it again.
3. V/A - Wavy Gravy (LP) - Bonkers comp that sees cowboys singing about the dangers of LSD mixed with truly rotten Garage and B movie ads. This LP is a must for those who dig the fringes of rock'n'roll.
4. V/A - London Is The Place For Me (LP) - London isn't exactly the place for me... I've been more times than I care to remember and didn't particularly enjoy any of those occasions, but don't let that put you off. This comp goes back to the time when Britain first started to see black faces and the birth of Brit calypso. Lord Kitchener features heavily, and you can listen to songs about the coronation, cricket and bawdy numbers about saxophones. Genius.
5. The Mauds - You Made Me Feel So Bad (45) - Tough Northern Souler that is oft overlooked because of the rubbish band name. Don't let it put you off for, if you do, you're missing out on a fast paced brassy dancer that'll make you wish it was Friday night.
6. The Kinks - Something Else (CD) - Underrated Kinks LP sees Ray Davies honing his Englishness whilst throwing in a ball from left field with the bossa nova of No Return. This is probably Davies' best outing lyrically and features David Watts (as murdered by The Jam) and the wacked out Lazy Old Sun.
7. Bob Hocko and The Swamp Rats - Disco Still Sucks (LP) - I know nothing of this LP and I'm keeping it that way. All you need to know is that you have an LP crammed with the dirtiest Garage and a blinding cover of the Garage hymn, Louie Louie.
8. Tits Of Death - Iron Nipples (45) - Thundering sleazoid garage goth track that sees yelps and wails about nipples made of iron, a steel bra and some truly frightening guitar sounds. It needs to be heard to be believed.
9. Gilbert O'Sullivan As Himself (LP) - If you don't own this LP, get yourself down the charity shops and dig it out now. Featuring baroque pop, wild lyrics that confuse and bewilder and catchy melodies. McCartney wished he made this album. Gilbert O'Sullivan is one of the most underrated songwriters in the history of music. He's a genius... time to accept it as fact.
10. V/A - Insane Times (CD) - As reviewed on these very pages, Insane Times is a cracking mix of Britsike that covers everything from bubblegum to prog. Excellent value at around a fiver too. Get on it!
